Solving Stemware

Creating Lean Protection

Amazon noticed an opportunity to reduce packaging and increase savings for fragile stemware through SIOC certification. Fuseneo was tasked to create a SIOC design for Lenox’s set of 6 Tuscany Red Wine Glasses as a template for similar fragile products. The current packaging for e-commerce took the existing retail packaging, placed it in a larger box, and then required Amazon to place it in an even larger box. This created substantial wasted space and material and a frustrating consumer experience.

We tested the current packaging to assess where greater protection was needed, looking for ways to reduce the number of materials and space used. During testing, the glass stems consistently fractured when dropped. Multiple approaches were explored to provide appropriate support using minimal material. Ultimately an accordion structure struck the proper balance.

The new insert construction contains multiple contact points to distribute the impact during a drop. This overall resulted in 78% volume reduction and 83% material weight reduction. The final design achieved an FFP certification, providing proper protection with fewer materials in a space-saving package.
