How could Starbucks drive sales of hot food items in its stores? The answer seemed to lie in a consumer demand for a protein-packed, low-carb breakfast. Enter the Sous Vide Egg Bites, a new product with a premium feel. Even before they knew what size or format the product would take, we were asked to partner with Starbucks to create an elegant serving experience through efficient packaging design.
On-site brainstorming and research helped us gain an understanding of the end-to-end process, from shipping and storage to cooking, serving, eating and disposal.
Sometimes the most painstaking process can produce the humblest of forms. The best performing option was an elegant tray for two small egg bites, made of a coated pressed paper that could withstand the extreme cooking temperatures. The trays nest for easy storage and prep, while evoking a familiar sense of bakery pastries through their form. Since launching in January 2017, Egg Bites sales have increased more than 60%.
